Eco Warriors

Welcome to our Eco Warriors page!

Here, you will find everything we have been getting up to which promotes a more positive outlook on our environment!

Eco Warrior Lead – Miss Latimer

Eco Warriors, assemble.

Thank you for checking back in to our Eco Warriors blog. So much has been happening and the Secret Garden is growing and growing in the sunshine. This week, KS1 Eco Warriors have worked with Change For Life – Roots and Shoots team to develop some of our planters in to fruit and vegetable patches. Working with Bryan and Andy was great fun, the Eco girls planted a strawberry plant, spinach, onions and some beetroot. Yummy! All of these seeds and plant should be ready for us by October at the latest, we can’t wait to see them grow.

Challenge accepted… Thank you Year 1

This week, we noticed that the grass was started to look a little bit yellow rather than green and the Eco Warriors put it down to a lot of sun and little bit of rain. We challenged Year 1 to develop our Secret Garden and lay some grass seed ready for the Summer. We want this area to be overgrown and wild so flowers can flourish and animals can create their own habitats.
Thank you Year 1, we really appreciate it.

We did it!

The Secret Garden

The children of New Penshaw Academy have worked very hard, and we are so proud of everything they have achieved since their return to school. Miss Weldon and the Eco Warriors have worked alongside the whole school to develop our new outdoor area, which we have called ‘The Secret Garden’. From laying new paths, planting beautiful flowers and building bug hotels, we are almost finished! Here is an update on our progress so far.

The Secret Garden is almost complete!

The garden is almost complete! Across the week, the children and staff of New Penshaw have worked together to build paths, bug hotels and plan beautiful plants. Take a look at our progress so far.

The Secret Garden – VLOG 3

This week, the children have worked very hard in our garden. We now have amazing bug hotels, which are going to be named by the children, there are plants which are ready to be planted and we have extended the path!

Science week is here!

Science week is here, you will notice that tasks on Showbie are linked to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills. In preparation for science week, the Eco Warriors asked staff of New Penshaw to carry out an experiment link to these skills. Take a look at the video below to see what they’ve been getting up to.

Science week is here!

Bug hotel bingo!

Our Eco Team have launched Bug Hotel Bingo! The first card to be filled first will win an afternoon treat… how exciting! Which year group will be the first to win?

Science week is upon us…

Calling all scientists!

Yes, I’m talking to you because anybody can be a Scientist!

New Penshaw Academy are launching ‘Virtual Science Week’ from Monday 1st March where your children will become engineers, computer scientists and much more via Showbie. Each day your teacher will upload some fun activities to do from home.
The week after, we are working alongside ‘British Science Week’ to create a ‘Secret Garden’. The children of New Penshaw Academy are going to construct a beautiful garden across the week and we can’t wait to show you the finished area – it’s going to be amazing!

Keep an eye on our Eco Warriors blog page for updates throughout the week and we are still on the hunt for parents who work in STEM careers to help with an aspect of our Secret Garden too.

We need you!

Thank you very much!

New Penshaw Cardboard Arcade

During Science Week, the children in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 developed ideas on how to make an arcade game from cardboard. Sounds difficult? Not for us! By delving in to the use of engineering and mechanical skill, children created some amazing games to play with family members on Friday afternoon. The hall was filled with cheers and laughter and everyone was giving the games a real good go!

Thank you to family members who helped to develop the arcade game as well as the those who came along to take part! We had so much fun!

We are now a Silver Awarded Eco School

This week, the whole school has worked hard to develop areas of the Eco Award. To develop the school, we have worked on the outdoor area, created birdfeeders to promote biodiversity, ensured recycling happened in all classrooms and children took part in a litter pick! What a great week it has been!

The beginning of something exciting!

This week, we are beginning to develop our outdoor area by painting tyres to create fun plant pots! Soon, they will be filled with amazing, colourful flowers and a sensory garden!

Can you help?

Over the next few weeks, we will be collecting items for Science week (Week beginning Monday 9th March) Eco Warriors are collecting the following items to create birdfeeders:

  • 1L and 2L bottles
  • Wooden and plastic spoons
  • Egg boxes
  • Bird feed

Any donations would be greatly appreciated!

We’ve achieved the gold, now let’s get platinum!

We are very proud of our school this week as we have achieved the Green Tree School Gold Award from the Woodland Trust… what an achievement. This week, we were sent a wonderful plaque and we wanted to post to show it off to you all!

The Eco Board is done!

We are currently in the process of developing our new Eco Board. Here, the children of New Penshaw can see our action plan, environmental review, and our lovely bronze certificate. We also have a suggestions folder where children can help us with ideas on how to develop our Eco footprint. We hope you like our new board, check back soon with updates from the Eco Warriors!

Year 3 work with Groundworks

28.1.20 – Year 3 develop our Key Stage 1 area working with Groundworks

Today, Year 3 have had the opportunity to start our development of the outdoor learning space. We were very lucky to have Jane from Groundworks to give a helping hand and offer many hints and tips. We started by trowelling through soil which will prepare it for lovely plants to be added. We have also took our time to tidy and look after the green spaces we have.
This is a really great development for the Eco Warrior team, we are excited to continue our hard work!
